Rather surprisingly they are not Indian, but European in origin. They were exported to India as lighting for large homes and palaces in the 19th Century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCandles or oil lamps were placed inside the glass bell and the glass lid prevented soot from marking the ceiling of the palace or the tent. Many survived on the tall ceilings unlike their European counterparts which were taken down and smashed when electricity arrived. Our antique handis are mostly 19th or early 20th century. \u003cbr\u003ePlease note that this is hand blown old glass and may have small imperfections and some small scratches, but it is not surprising for glass that has survived around100yrs.\u003cbr\u003eThe height could be a little less with chain links removed.\u003cbr\u003eMost Handis can be wired at extra cost with a 3 way or single fitting and brass ceiling hooks can also be supplied if required.
