Usually, cabinets from Gansu are made from walnut, elm, or mulberry wood and the wood is left visible and unlacquered. This piece is constructed from walnut wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe red lacquer with gilt work is far more common in the south neighboring Shanxi province. The gilt scenes depict people living their day to day lives giving a real insight into the past. Some of the gilt work has worn away with age and this cabinet developed a fantastic patina.
