The everted flanges at the ends were used to stop scrolls rolling onto the floor. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt dates from the \u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eQing dynasty (1644 to 1912) and is constructed from cypress wood (baimu), a wood less commonly found used in the construction of this style of altar cabinet. Originally this sideboard would have been lacquered with a deep burgundy lacquer which has since worn away.
