They have been an iconic sight on Chinese waterways since at least 200AD and the Eastern Han Dynasty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePith paper is made from the spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera, native to south-west China.
