This stand is from Sindh and dates to the early 20th century - circa 1920. It's etched using the scratchwork technique by scratching away at layered lacquer to reveal the colours beneath. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eInternational exhibitions in the 19th century stimulated traditional crafts around the world. Sindh became well known for its high quality lac-turned wares. Good quality lacquerware is becoming increasingly difficult to find.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLacquering is done by the craftsman on a hand-powered lathe. The wooden piece is spun and a lac stick is pressed against the piece. As the piece spins friction softens the lac which coats the surface of the wood.
