They are constructed from lacquered wood (probably Chinese swamp wood which is now extinct) and woven bamboo. These baskets were traditionally filled with dried fruit, sweets \u0026amp; nuts and presented to the bride \u0026amp; groom at the wedding ceremony. Every painting has meaning and each panel has wonderfully detailed hand painted depictions of animals, birds \u0026amp; figures. They feature the auspicious '100 boys' motif thought in China to bring good fortune. Camels, grazing horses \u0026amp; deer are also depicted. There are symbols of longevity, strength and good luck.
