The style is classic of Jiangsu province, an area that uses predominantly red elm. Red elm (jumu \/ 榉木), also known as \u003cem\u003ezelkova\u003c\/em\u003e or \u003cem\u003e'southern elm'\u003c\/em\u003e is considered a superior wood to yumu, its northern cousin. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOriginally these pieces would have been coated with a burgundy lacquer which has worn away from years of use.
