These 19th century brass supari boxes are from the Indonesian Archipelago and would have been used for storing betel nut supari, also known as paan. Paan is a preparation, which combines a paste of spices in a betel leaf, which is chewed for its stimulant and psychoactive effects.
Paan boxes are found across Asia and due to the wide variety of styles and designs, they have become very popular with collectors. They're perfect for storing jewellery or as a desk tidy.
