Rosewood Chest From Kutch - 19th Century

This 19th century Anglo-Indian military chest comes from Kutch, India. Constructed from solid rosewood, it has developed a rich, warm patina that highlights the natural grain of the timber. Its proportions also make it an excellent choice for use as a coffee table.

The chest retains its original brass and iron fittings, including decorative brass lock plate, straps and carrying handles. The large open interior provides generous storage, while a sturdy chain prevents the lid from opening too far and placing strain on the hinges. Old repairs around the hinges are evidence of its long working life.

Military chests such as this were made for officers of the British Indian Army to transport their kit and personal possessions while travelling. Built to withstand the rigours of frequent transportation, this is a fine example of practical Anglo-Indian furniture from the period.
