Black Glazed Wine Jar From Shanxi - 19th Century

This small 19th-century Chinese wine jar originates from Shanxi Province in northern China. Made from stoneware, it has a rich black-brown glaze with subtle variations in colour created during firing.

The jar has a rounded body, short neck and four loop handles around the shoulder, originally allowing it to be secured or carried. The lower section has been left unglazed, revealing the natural clay beneath.

Originally made as a practical vessel for storing or transporting wine or other liquids, its surface shows the wear and imperfections expected from generations of use. Today it makes an attractive decorative jar with a strong, simple form.
