Brass Lotus Incense Burner from South India - 19thC

An excellent example of an Indian brass lotus bud incense burner which dates to the 19th century. The burner sits atop a yali lion. Yali lions featured prominently in South India and were protectors of temples. The yali lion stands poised to pounce atop a lotus throne riding a turtle.
The lotus operates on a screw can be turned to open or close the lamp as shown in photos. This simple mechanism shows off the beautiful blossoming the lotus flower is so well known for.
Pieces like these have become difficult to find in India now.
