Recumbent Bronze Nandi Bull From The Deccan - 18th Century

This exquisite bronze Nandi bull originates from the Deccan region of India. Nandi is known for strength & virility - the name means 'giving delight' or 'giving joy.' Nandi or Nandin is the sacred vahana (vehicle) of the Lord Shiva, inferring his power as a procreator. This is further reinforced by the lingam, a fertility symbol which Nandi kneels towards. 

Devoted worshippers have polished this resplendent figure of a bull over time. Nandi is present in the home temple (mandapa) of every Shaivite and would be displayed in a recumbent position facing Lord Shiva. This Nandi still has remnants of ritual tika paste applied during daily puja.
