Gilt Red Lacquer Side Cabinet From Shanxi -19th Century

This beautifully proportioned cabinet is covered in a rich red lacquer and decorated with gilt scenes of the countryside. The bottom drawers are decorated with floral paintings. 

The lacquer is a resin made from the sap of the Rhus verniciflua tree. Lacquer has a long history in Chinese furniture and has been used for over 2000 years. 

The interior of this piece offers a spacious storage area separated by a shelf. The three drawers along the bottom add additional storage.
