Cizhou Wine Jar from Taiyuan – 19th Century

This authentic 19th century Cizhou-type wine jar from Taiyuan in Shanxi Province is a beautiful example of northern China's celebrated folk ceramics. Hand-thrown in stoneware, the jar is coated in a creamy white slip before being freely decorated with expressive iron-brown brushwork, combining bands of geometric ornament with calligraphic characters and stylised natural motifs.

Cizhou wares have been produced in northern China since the Song Dynasty (960–1279) and are admired for their bold painted decoration and honest, functional character. Unlike porcelain made for the imperial court, Cizhou pottery was created for everyday life, with each brushstroke reflecting the confidence and individuality of the potter. No two pieces are ever exactly alike.

Originally used for storing wine, oil or other household provisions, this jar now makes a striking decorative object. Its softly weathered glaze, rich earthy tones and naturally aged surface tell the story of more than a century of practical use, making it equally at home in both rustic and contemporary interiors.
